Don't Let the Softness Intimidate You

The first time you touch Cuddle® fabric, it's easy to assume it's difficult to sew. The plush texture, stretchy feel, and fluffy pile can seem intimidating—but the truth is, Cuddle® is much easier to work with than most people expect.

With a few simple techniques and the right supplies, you'll be creating soft blankets, stuffed animals, pillows, and gifts you'll be proud to share.

Whether this is your very first Cuddle® project or you're looking to improve your results, this guide will help you sew with confidence.

What Makes Cuddle® Fabric Different?

Unlike traditional quilting cotton, Cuddle® fabric has a soft raised pile that gives it its luxurious feel.

That extra softness also means it behaves a little differently while sewing.

You may notice:

Fabric shifting while stitching
A little stretch when handling
Fluff when cutting
Thicker seams than woven cotton

None of these are problems—they're simply characteristics of the fabric.

The Good News

Once you understand how Cuddle® behaves, it becomes surprisingly enjoyable to sew.

Many sewists avoid Cuddle® because they think it's "too difficult."

Most discover the opposite.

After their first successful project, it often becomes one of their favorite fabrics to work with.

Supplies That Make Sewing Easier

You don't need a room full of specialty tools.

A few basic supplies make all the difference.

Before You Start

There are three things I'd recommend before cutting your first piece.

Read the Pattern

Some Cuddle® fabrics have a nap (direction of the pile), so pay attention to layout instructions before cutting.

Plan for Seam Bulk

Because Cuddle® is thicker than quilting cotton, avoid unnecessary seam allowances piling on top of one another whenever possible.

Give Yourself Room

Cuddle® is wonderfully soft...

...and wonderfully fluffy.

You'll appreciate having a little extra table space while cutting and sewing.

Take It Outside. Trust Me.

The first time you cut Cuddle® fabric, don't panic when the fluff starts flying—that's completely normal! I like to take my cutting mat outside (or at least into the garage) before making the first cut. A quick shake, a lint roller, and you're ready to head back inside and enjoy the fun part... sewing.
