Don't Let the Fluff Scare You

If you've never cut Cuddle® fabric before, you're about to discover one of its most famous characteristics...

It sheds.

The tiny fibers released while cutting can end up on your table, your clothes, and sometimes even across the room. The good news? It's completely normal—and with a few simple tricks, it's easy to manage.

This guide will show you how to cut Cuddle® fabric cleanly while keeping the mess to a minimum.

Why Does Cuddle® Shed?

Cuddle® fabric has a luxurious plush pile that gives it its incredible softness. When you cut through that pile, some of those loose fibers are naturally released.

This doesn't mean the fabric is defective or will continue shedding forever. Most of the loose fibers are created during the cutting process.

Once your project is sewn and finished, the shedding is dramatically reduced.

Before You Cut

A little preparation goes a long way.

Before making your first cut:

Clear your cutting surface.
Keep a lint roller nearby.
Have a small vacuum or handheld vacuum ready if possible.
Consider wearing clothing that won't attract lint.

A few minutes of preparation can save a lot of cleanup later.

Use a Sharp Rotary Cutter

A sharp rotary cutter makes cleaner cuts and reduces unnecessary tugging on the fabric.

Replace dull blades regularly. A fresh blade glides through Cuddle® much more smoothly and helps maintain accurate cuts.

Cut from the Back

Whenever possible, place the plush side down and cut from the backing side of the fabric.

This helps reduce disturbance to the pile and often results in cleaner edges with less loose fluff.

Make Long, Smooth Cuts

Avoid short, choppy cuts.

Instead, let the rotary cutter do the work with slow, even pressure.

Long, continuous cuts produce straighter edges and minimize unnecessary movement of the pile.

Take It Outside. Trust Me.

The first time you cut Cuddle® fabric, don't panic when the fluff starts flying—that's completely normal! I like to take my cutting mat outside (or at least into the garage) before making the first cut. A quick shake, a lint roller, and you're ready to head back inside and enjoy the fun part... sewing.

Cleaning Up

Once you've finished cutting:

✔ Shake the fabric gently.

✔ Use a lint roller on the cut edges.

✔ Vacuum your cutting mat if needed.

✔ Brush loose fibers from your work surface before sewing.

Most of the cleanup happens immediately after cutting—not while sewing.
